“My Eyes (Self Portrait)”

Preston Gravitt

“My Eyes” is the first Self Portrait acrylic painting by Preston Gravitt. The concept behind this painting is “the ambiguous eye” in reference not only to the subject’s eyes following any observer from any visible angle but also in reference to which eye is being observed. This is both of the artist’s eyes in one shifting stare. It alludes to many prior art pieces and uses over a decade of mixed media hoarded by the artist including paint chips from well used palettes, extra hardware from restaurant openings, glitter from my wife’s wedding shoes, etc. The canvas itself was found by the dumpster and originally had a decorative eye design and defacing tear in it. With different lighting, such as backlighting or front, layers of color are made visible further enhancing the depth and overall ambiguity of perception and perspective by Preston.
